Yesterday morning, Felix and I went to the food bank. It opens at 8:30 AM, so we showed up at 7:30 figuring we’d be among the first in line. But since it was nice weather out, apparently everyone else thought so, too! So we were actually the 26th family in line! And they only serve 50 families a day.
For Felix’s training, one of the good things about waiting outside of the food bank is that it’s right next to a very busy street. Felix has some issues with road noise sometimes, so it’s good for him to just chill while there are busses and garbage trucks and loud motorcycles going by. He was very relaxed and just hung out in my lap the whole time.
At 8:30 they opened the doors and people started to file in. The way it works is you get checked in, then you get to grab your choice of household products, and then you drive your car around back and they put in your allotted groceries.
I saw a bunch of people leaving the household section with bags of Blue Buffalo dog food, which is a pretty good food! I got very excited that maybe I’d get some nice dog food! I couldn’t tell by looking at the bags people were carrying if they were chicken based or other meat based, though. And we can’t have chicken based due to Hestia.
Unfortunately by the time I got there, all the dog food was gone. If I’m going to be “sour grapes” about it, the food probably had chicken in it anyway!
I was braver than I usually am about getting into the building. The side door where they prefer everyone to enter is really too narrow for my wheelchair. The door opening is probably 3/4 of an inch wider than my wheelchair so I really have to thread the needle to get through, including having a very straight approach and follow through. Last time I went through, it snagged my bag and destroyed it. So this time I asked if they could let me in the wider front door when it was my turn. They were very nice and agreed.
When I got home, it was 9:30 and time for Brad to wake up. So he got up and watched me unpack all the food we got. We got a pretty good haul, but especially of breakfast items! We got a large package of sausages, 3 dozen eggs, frozen waffles, frozen french toast, toaster pastries, cereal bars, and a large danish that has six servings. I guess I’ll be feasting on breakfast for the next month!
We also got two large quiches, four packages of Korean BBQ chicken, two packages of lunch meat, ground turkey, chicken thighs, two bags of pecans, two bags of almonds, crackers, cookies, Fun Dip (remember that?!), ginger ale, yogurt, carrots, celery, mushrooms, a yellow pepper, frozen blueberries, canned veggies, and a few other things. We also got a package of pigs feet, which we won’t eat and I am currently trying to give away on Facebook.
I got a couple of pictures of Felix while we were waiting in line. He is wearing his pink vest (to match my blue and pink dress). In one of the pictures, he’s standing up and looking to the left to watch the traffic noise. In the other picture, he’s lying on my lap looking into the camera.
