You may remember that I went to a new optometrist that is covered by my insurance to get a prescription for glasses, then ordered them from an online retailer. I had already figured out that the optometrist totally missed prisms in one direction.
So today I took Felix and my wheelchair and went to In Focus Eye Care, who was my old optometrist. I explained everything that happened and they spent a lot of time examining my eyes and talking with me about what had gone wrong.
They confirmed that the optometrist had incorrectly evaluated my prescription and missed double vision in one plane entirely. However, they also measured the glasses I got from online and found out that they didn’t even give me the correct prisms that I had ordered from that optometrist! They were wrong by a LOT (2-3 diopters in each eye!). So both people messed up!
They said that if you have prisms, you can NOT trust online glasses manufacturers, as they almost always mess them up. They also said that prisms are very hard to assess and you need to make sure you go to someone experienced with them to get a prescription. So I messed up on two counts.
Luckily they said that they could take the frames I ordered online and put the correct lenses into them. So I paid $420 for lenses to go into one pair of frames that I had ordered. I guess I’ll keep the other frames I ordered for a future pair of glasses. They recommended in the future, since I like really fun frames, that I do the same thing. Order frames online, but get the lenses from them.
I also had to pay about $130 for an eye exam with them. This year there’s no way I could get insurance to cover it since I used my insurance on the other optometrist. But in three years when I need new glasses again, I can try to submit my bill to insurance and they might pay a portion of it. So there’s some hope, I guess.
So much for trying to get cheaper glasses!
I did get a selfie of me in a red mask and Felix in a pink vest while we were sitting in the exam chair. Enjoy!
