Family at the natural history museum part 1

Last week, we visited the Museum of York County with Brad’s parents, aunt, and cousin. This is one of our favorite local museums. It has a lot of taxidermy in it, and some really neat exhibits.

The first exhibit we saw was their new temporary exhibit on mushrooms. Someone had used a 3D printer to make mushrooms outside of the main hall that were true to life. There was a large log with 3D-printed mushrooms in it that we explored. Well, the humans explored it, while Felix explored the possibility of me giving him treats if he did a paws up onto my knee!

Then they had a room that was dark that was filled with 3D printed mushrooms with lights in their bases. It looked magical and enchanted! I really enjoyed the display! Brad got several pictures of us in the room using his handheld colored light, and one video of Felix heeling while walking through the mushrooms.

Next we visited one of the rooms that has some activities in it geared towards children. It has a hollowed out tree you can go into and get up on a wooden platform like a treehouse! Of course I had to try it with Felix! I couldn’t get on the platform, but I put Felix up there! They also had a display in the room of taxidermied birds that was pretty cool.

Also in the same room is a hollowed out log for kids to climb through. Now I didn’t crawl through the log myself! But Brad did get some great pictures of Felix from through the log! In one of the pictures, Brad’s dad is actually stepping over Felix as he holds a stand-stay!

Next we visited a room where the taxidermied pieces were linked up with sounds. So you could press a button and hear sounds that the animals would have made when alive. Felix was surely interested in those sounds! Especially the bullfrog. We got several pictures and a great video of him looking intently at the noises!

The very back of this room has a nighttime area. It is really dark and you can just barely make out a rural scene with a coyote, bobcat, owl, snake, and other creatures! Felix wasn’t scared at all! This room is one of Nancy and Tamara’s favorites!

The last room we visited for this blog entry (stay tuned tomorrow for the rest of the museum!) had animals that lived in more plains type areas. They had a winter scene that was very chilly to look at! And a great big Bald Eagle that Tamara really enjoyed.

My favorite area of this room was the giant buffalo! It was such a great display! It was behind glass, but they had a little raised fake-dirt part that you could walk to get closer to the glass, and Felix enjoyed a bit of training going up and down off the platform. He wasn’t bothered by the buffalo at all! And he also held his stay really well as people walked by!

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s blog entry where we visit the nature center area of the museum, the gift shop, and the planetarium!
